What’s Your Purpose?
Author: Tony Fahkry
What is your purpose on earth? That’s an imposing question for an introduction. Let’s get our hands dirty by uncovering some truths. Many of you have never entertained the idea you may be here for a reason. It’s not until disaster or tragedy strikes when one questions their life’s meaning.
My illness years ago became the instrument for discovering my purpose. My purpose is the work I perform and similarly the person I’ve become. Your talents, skills and the intangible gifts you were blessed with, define your purpose.
I’ve experienced point three, via my illness and the loss of my father to type II diabetes. I found my purpose in the midst of personal suffering and tragedy. I’ve had the privilege of working with remarkable people who’ve shared similar experiences in their lives. Having been through life’s worst moments, they’re able to see the beauty and miracle of life.
So what is your purpose? You might be surprised to learn you’re already living your purpose without knowing it. Perhaps it’s through your work, the people you impact or your creative pursuits. You find your purpose when the words you write down on paper bring tears to your eyes.
That is a powerful message for us all. Those tears surface everytime I’m on stage inspiring people, talking about greatness or the human spirit and gratitude. I found my purpose by living it daily. It becomes a part of my being. I couldn’t hide from it or turn off or down. It resides within me, since I awakened it.
Your purpose is your soul’s call to life. When I’m in harmony and in alignment with my purpose, doors and opportunities open in the simplest way. One of my favourite affirmations as testament to this is, “In an easy and relaxed manner. In a healthy and positive way, I allow life to flow through me.”I suspend my ego to hear the silent whisper of my soul speaking to me.
How do you know you’re in alignment and you’re connecting with your soul? There is an indescribable feeling wash over you when living your purpose. I feel it in my heart centre. I am overwhelmed with certain emotion, euphoria and rapture. Since I exercise regularly, I’m attuned to the dopamine high felt during and after training. Nothing comes close to the feeling when connected to your soul as you live and breathe your purpose. It becomes a part of your nature.
The following are suggestions for finding and connecting with your purpose. They are three points I feel worthy of mention to help guide you.
- Discover your passion – what makes your heart sing with joy? Is it playing a musical instrument, singing, writing, dancing or other? Perhaps you’re still discovering your passion. That’s great. Take your time. Your passion is a gift from the universe. Your gift back is to share it with others.
- What’s been your life’s theme? – If I asked you to write a short narrative on your life in the form of a play or motion picture, how would it look? What is the plot? Who are the main characters, apart from you? What is the underlying theme? i.e. overcoming obstacles, learning to love, self acceptance, discovering talents. These questions allow you to discover the mystery of your life. Looking back over your life, you discover the uniqueness which shapes your purpose.
- What experiences/moments have shaped your life? – Graduating from college or high school? Your first romantic relationship? Being awarded a prize for achievement or service? It may be the complete opposite; losing a loved one to a life threatening illness, reconnecting with your paternal or maternal parent, since they were absent when you were growing up? Write down these major moments and reflect on what they mean to you.
I’m certain if you were raised by a single parent or a loved one died at a young age; relationships form an important part of your life. Reflecting on this may lead you to tears. Perhaps your purpose is a meaningful relationship, through deep and meaningful love.
I invite you to connect with your spirit to find your purpose. If you’re already living your purpose; may you continue to shine your talent and genius to the world. If you’re discovering your purpose, fear not; for every mistake or dead-end is drawing you closer to your pot of gold.
There are no mistakes in this purposeful universe; even a mistake or wrong turn has been perfectly orchestrated to you draw you to exactly where you need to be.
